Currently the Thunder Plains is a great place to level up and gain abilities. It is definitely worth the time traveling down this road to collect items and gain AP.
After entering and listening to Yuna reminisce, walk forward to speak to the Al Bhed standing next to the Save Sphere. The Al Bhed have taken control of the plains, calibrating the towers so no more pesky lighting strikes! That will make traveling this road much simpler. Later in the game you will be able to help the Al Bhed refine their calibrations for some rewards. For now walk to the far right and back a little ways from the Save Sphere to collect Echo Screen x3 from a chest. Head north keeping to the right side of the plains to find another chest with Potion x2. Continue on to find yet another chest near the end of this section near the middle of the road. It contains a Black Choker. Take the left most path to find the Thunder Plains Travel Agency. Enter the agency if you wish to buy items or talk to NPC's. If not, continue on.

Upon entering the next section their will be a Phoenix Down in a chest that is not hard to miss. Collect it and continue north until you are about midway through this area. To the right side you will find another chest with Grenade x2. Keep heading north to find the last chest of the area near a small lake. Opening it, you will find an Ether. Continue on to the Macalania Woods.
