Fatal Fury/Basic Moves

Terry Bogard

Click here for more information about Terry's other fighting game appearances.

Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード) is an American fighter and the older brother of Andy Bogard. He is often referred to as the Legendary Hungry Wolf (from Garou Densetsu, meaning Legend of the Hungry Wolf).

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Terry Bogard () is the main character of the Fatal Fury series. He has appeared in every Fatal Fury game, and is one of the characters of choice to symbolize the company in crossover games, merchandise and publicity. He appears to fit many Japanese stereotypes for an American character in appearance, personality and speech (his in-game vocabulary is usually limited to American colloquialisms, such as "Okay!" and "Hey, c'mon, c'mon.").

Terry Bogard is the brother of Andy Bogard. Both of them were orphans adopted by Jeff Bogard. He is often referred to as the Legendary Hungry Wolf (from Garou Densetsu, meaning Legend of the Hungry Wolf). He has a pet monkey named Ukee (the previous mascot of SNK before Terry) and is said to have the unique ability of accurately guessing a woman's measurements just by glancing at her. He also has a knack for shooting three-pointers or free throws in basketball, which explains the creation of his Power Dunk move.

Terry comes from the fictitious town of Southtown, U.S.A. (a setting for many SNK games), and is the adoptive son of Jeff Bogard. During his childhood, he witnessed the death of his father at the hands of Geese Howard. Terry chose to pursue his revenge at a later time. But unlike his brother Andy, who left Southtown to train in Japan, Terry chose to stay in his hometown, combining the skills learned from his father with abilities gained from the streets.

At the time of Fatal Fury, the crime lord Geese Howard organized a tournament, dubbed The King of Fighters. Terry, Andy and Muay Thai Kickboxing champion Joe Higashi would enter with the purpose of facing Geese. The battle that followed would eventually see Terry defeating Geese, and for some time, it was thought that Geese perished in the battle. The next year saw Geese's half-brother Wolfgang Krauser take control of The King of Fighters, and bringing the once Southtown-only tournament onto the world stage (as shown in Fatal Fury 2). The finals of this new tournament would again see Terry fighting the sponsor and him ultimately defeating Krauser.

Some time later it was revealed that Geese had survived his encounter with Terry. The Bogards and friends learned of Geese's intentions to retrieve the legendary Jin scrolls, Terry once again challenged and defeated him. Defeated, Geese fled and Terry battled to the end of the tournament, defeating characters such as Ryuji Yamazaki, until finally facing the Jin brothers Chonrei and Chonshu. These events take place in Fatal Fury 3.

In the Fatal Fury games , Terry wears a red denim vest with a star on the back (with sometimes the words 'Running Wild' beneath the star) worn over a short-sleeved white T-shirt shirt, sometimes with tattered sleeves, fingerless gloves (biker/fighting gloves), jeans and a pair of red Chuck Taylor All Star shoes. He tops it off with his trademark red-and-white baseball/trucker cap, with the words Fatal Fury on it (and sometimes Neo-Geo or King of Fighters). Terry wears his blonde hair long, but keeps it tied in a ponytail with bangs around his forehead/cheeks.

Terry's story continues in his Real Bout profile.

Andy Bogard

Click here for more information about Andy's other fighting game appearances.

Andy Bogard (アンディー・ボガード) is the brother of Terry Bogard and the son of Jeff Bogard. Although he is of American descendant, he was raised and trained in Japan (unlike his brother Terry).

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Andy practices the Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and a form of empty-handed ninja combat called Koppouken, which he trained in after witnessing his foster father's murder in order to gain revenge on Geese Howard. Mai Shiranui is his fiancée, and the granddaughter of Hanzo Shiranui, the man he learned Ninjitsu from.

It was after his foster father Jeff's death that Tung Fu Rue took responsibility for raising himself and Terry. Andy went to Japan to train under Hanzo and grew up alongside Mai, while Terry stayed in South Town.

During Andy's time in Japan, he met the Muay Thai fighter Joe Higashi, and challenged him to a match. When Andy won, he invited Joe to return to America with him to enter the King of Fighters tournament, held by Geese. Before this, Andy had rarely, if ever, seen Terry in the interim since Jeff's death. Andy quickly grew jealous of Terry because Terry was taller, older, and quite possibly a better fighter, and unlike Andy, Terry did not practice a grueling daily training regimen.

Late in the tournament, Andy tried to kill off Geese by himself. Geese's power proved to be too much for Andy as he almost fell to his death. Terry saved Andy, who finally acknowledged Terry as the better of the two brothers.

Andy's emotions prevented him from reaching the final round, but when Terry defeated Geese, Andy felt a sense of closure and returned to Japan to continue his training. News of the death of his master, caused Andy to train harder than before and become the greatest fighter in the world.

After Terry beat Geese at the end of their first King of Fighters Tournament, a new tournament was held, this time hosted by Wolfgang Krauser. Andy, while present in the tournament, once again lost out to Terry.

Years later during a party attended by Andy and Mai at Richard Meyer's Pao Pao Cafe 2, the Jin Twins crashed it and boasted a claim recovering the Jin Scrolls, a family heirloom that can grant immortality. The twins challenged all of Southtown to see who was the best fighter to obtain the scrolls. Andy was one of the fighters intent on making sure the Jins never got the scroll. He faced the twins bodyguard Yamazaki, but underestimated him and Andy was knock unconscious.

When he awoke, Geese Howard, thought to have died, was holding the Jin Scrolls. Andy's story continues in his Real Bout profile.

Joe Higashi

Click here for more information about Joe's other fighting game appearances.

Joe Higashi (ジョー・ヒガシ) is a champion of Muay Thai and a good friend to Andy Bogard. Although Joe's place of origin is Japan, he spent the majority of his time at Thailand, where he trained Muay Thai. It was through his victories that Joe got the nickname "Hurricane Upper" Joe Higashi.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Joe earned his title as the champion of Muay Thai by beating Hwa Jai in a Muay Thai only tournament. Hwa Jai later joined the King of Fighters tournament in order to exact revenge against Joe but failed, and after admitting his defeat they're good friends and sparring partners. Ever since then, Joe has been defending his title against lesser opponents. Joe then met Andy Bogard and assumed that he is superior to Andy in an exhibition match. Joe was wrong as he was defeated. Realizing that he was much slower than Andy, Joe congratulated Andy for his tenacity.

Andy then offered Joe a chance to join him on a quest to Southtown in order to help him and his brother Terry exact revenge against Geese Howard, the man responsible for the death of their father Jeff Bogard. Although Joe understands that he risked expulsion from the Muay Thai Federation for this, Joe accepted Andy's offer and then went to the King of Fighters tournament to support the Bogards unconditionally. While both Andy and Joe were not able to fight Geese, Joe did his job in helping the Bogards out. Terry managed to defeat Billy Kane and later on bested Geese on top of the Geese Building. Joe then returned to Thailand to defend his title.

However, his recess turned out to be short-lived when a German brute named Wolfgang Krauser attacked his archrival Hwa Jai without warning. Joe was forced to enter the King of Fighters tournament to investigate the truth behind Hwa Jai's beating. While Joe tried to prove that he was much stronger than the Bogards, he could not do so and all he could do was provide support for the Bogards again. Joe then helped Terry and Andy defeat Billy, Axel Hawk and even Laurence Blood.

Years later during a party attended by Andy and Mai at Richard Meyer's Pao Pao Cafe 2, the Jin Twins crashed it and boasted a claim of recovering the Jin Scrolls, a family heirloom that can grant immortality. The twins challenged all of Southtown to see who was the best fighter to obtain the scrolls. Joe was one of the fighters intent on making sure the Jins never got the scrolls. He faced the twin's bodyguard Yamazaki, and was knocked unconscious from one blow.

When he awoke, Geese Howard, thought to have died, was holding the Jin Scrolls. Joe's story continues in his Real Bout profile.

Duck King

Click here for more information about Duck King's other fighting game appearances.

Duck King (ダック・キング) is a fighter, DJ and bar owner who grew up in one of South Town's many ghettos. His fighting style uses a combination of various forms of dancing (mainly breakdancing).

Story (in the Fatal Fury Series)

A Southtown native, Duck King grew up in an impoverished family in the city’s ghetto. It was in this poor district where he would take interest in fighting and even a greater interest in music and, even more so, dance. He spent a great deal of time with breakdancing and the B-boy culture so much so that it became a part of his life. Duck King began to go to frequent nightclubs as his dancing skills vastly improved. His overwhelming and thrilling antics on the dance floor worked its way into a fighting style of Duck King’s own design.

Using his fighting style to confuse other fighters in the ghetto’s West Subway, Duck King started to create a reputation with the fighters in Southtown. When news of Geese Howard’s King of Fighters tournament broke, an excited Duck King jumped at the chance to enter. While being an odds on favorite, Duck King was manhandled by the Lonely Wolves (consisting of Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi), more specifically, Terry (as Duck King hates his Rising Tackle).

After his loss, Duck King went back to the ghetto to develop his fighting style to flow with the rhythm of battle. Around this time he met up with the bouncer, King and the two pulled together enough money to start a massive bar in Southtown. Here King’s King of Fighters tournament matches were hosted with Duck King acting as the DJ for the bar.

During the events of Fatal Fury 3 and Real Bout Fatal Fury, Duck was invited to Richard Meyer’s new night club, the Pao Pao Café 2. The grand opening was spoiled by the Jin twins Chonrei and Chonshu who wrecked the café. They sought the Jin Scrolls which were stolen from them. These scrolls eventually end up in the hands of Geese Howard, who was once thought dead.

Duck King's story continues in his Real Bout profile.

Richard Meyer

Click here for more information about Richard's other fighting game appearances.

Originally from Brazil, Richard Myer(リチャード・マイヤ) is a Capoeira master who used his skills to entertain the nightclub crowds.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Richard Myer is one of the first fighting game characters to use Capoeira.

While he had fun entertaining the masses and loved the recognition for it, he felt he had to move on. Moving to the United States, Richard made his home in Southtown. It was here he opened the Pao Pao Café, a nightclub reminiscent to those of his native Brazil. Unlike the bars in Southtown, Richard would not tolerate any discord caused by criminals and thugs in his club, literally kicking them out if they do.

When Geese Howard held the King of Fighters tournament (in Fatal Fury, Richard entered to promote the Pao Pao Café. While he accomplished this goal and beat several fighters in the process, he was beaten by the Lonely Wolves (the Bogard brothers, Terry and Andy, and Muay Thai champ Joe Higashi). Richard was a good sport about losing and the Pao Pao Café became Southtown’s ideal nightclub spot.

The club also became a hot spot among fighters where they can spar against one another or just hang out. This was evident when another King of Fighters tournament was held by Wolfgang Krauser and all the fights were shown live in the café. The profits from that venture were so high, combine with the club’s ongoing popularity, that Richard had enough money to build a second Pao Pao Café in Southtown.

During the grand opening of Pao Pao Café 2, with his Capoeira student, Bob Wilson, acting as the manager, the place was wrecked by the Jin twins, Chonshu and Chonrei. As Bob went after the Jin twins for what they had done, Richard stayed to rebuild the second Pao Pao.

Richard has now devoted his time to entreating the masses and garnering attention for both Pao Pao Cafés. He has made many friends in the fighting community ever since.

Michael Max

  • Name: Micheal Max
  • First appearance: Fatal Fury
  • Other appearances: none

Michael Max (マイケル・マックス) is a Southtown heavyweight boxer who lost most of his fame and wealth. He is also the friend and student of Axel Hawk.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Born in the slums, Michael Max became a talented heavyweight boxer. He attempted to be the greatest in the sport, but corrupted his own career when he was enticed with money and women. Falling from grace and into misery, Michael headed to Southtown and using his hatred and frustration for the situation to fuel him and his constant battling of Southown thugs, Michael constantly trained to recapture what he had.

He entered the King of Fighters tournament held by Geese Howard in Fatal Fury believing his powerful fists and grueling training will help him win. Sadly, all his training was rendered sub par by the Lonely Wolves (Terry Bogard, his brother Andy and Muay Thai champ Joe Higashi) and he was easily beaten.

Afterwards, Michael was never seen again. He allegedly retired from fighting for good never to do battle again.

Tung Fu Rue

Click here for more information about Tung Fu Rue's other fighting game appearances.

A legendary master of Hakkyokuseiken, Tung Fu Rue (タン・フー・ルー) was the former master of both the noble Jeff Bogard and the power hungry Geese Howard.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Tung Fu Rue taught Jeff Bogard as well as Geese Howard when they were still boys. While Geese made it no secret that he would use Master Tung’s teachings to assault those who stand in his way, Tung taught the youth regardless. As time went by, Jeff was quickly becoming an honorable and skilled martial artist, with two boys he himself adopted as his sons. Geese though was becoming more arrogant and more ruthless than before. When Tung was ready to choose an heir to the Hakkyokuseiken art, he picked Jeff. This decision brought the wrath of Geese, who promised vengeance.

In an act of cowardice, Geese killed Jeff and rose to prominence by taking over Southtown. After mourning the death of his intended successor, Tung sought out Jeff’s sons. Still harboring a hatred for what Geese did to their father, the brothers Terry and Andy were given an opportunity by Tung to train in the way of martial arts. While Terry trained himself in Southtown, Andy went to Japan to be trained by Hanzo Shiranui, Tung’s old friend, in Shiranui-Ryuu Koppou Ken. Tung knew the two needed to train to stand a chance against Geese, if they just went after him in the state they were in; he would have killed them too. With both boys gone, Master Tung went into isolation.

Ten years later, Tung reunited with the adult Bogard brothers. With Andy’s friend from Japan, Joe Higashi, Tung and the brothers entered Geese’s King of Fighters tournament in the first Fatal Fury game. He seeks to find out which one of the brothers is worthy of his teachings by testing them himself. Master Tung was a force to be reckoned with in the tournament while still monitoring the progress of Terry and Andy. While Andy’s desire for revenge would have eventually made him exactly like Geese, it was clear to Master Tung that Terry’s ambition for fighting skilled challengers reminded him of himself when he was young. Hence Tung taught Terry the secrets of the Hakkyokuseiken style.

Fatigued, Master Tung finished Terry’s training and told him to defeat Geese. Terry does this, knocking Geese out of the top floor from Geese Tower. Tung knew that Geese was still alive and Terry would find eventually, but by then Terry would be ready when the time came. Currently, Master Tung’s whereabouts are unknown.

The only canonical appearance of Tung Fu Rue is his appearance in Fatal Fury. In this game, Tung would 'buff-up' into a muscular version after he took a certain amount of damage. In later (non-canonical) games, his muscular version would only appear while performing certain special moves. Tung also appears in the Real Bout series.

Hwa Jai

Click here for more information about Hwa Jai's other fighting game appearances.

Hwa Jai (ホア・ジャイ) is a powerful, Thailand based Muay Thai fighter.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

While Hwa Jai was one of Thailand’s best fighters, he was bested in several international tournaments by the overconfident yet (superiorly trained) Joe Higashi. The two became fierce rivals with Joe always being the victor.

This prompted prompted him to start cheating by drinking a strange fluid that boosted his physical attributes exponentially. Worrying he would have been found out, Hwa Jai moved to Southtown, where many fighters reside and none would care about him using the drink. Entering Geese Howard’s King of Fighters tournament, Hwa Jai sought his vengeance against Joe. He faced off against his arrogant nemesis once more resulting in (despite his training and his drink’s power boost) Joe coming out the winner.

Shamed, Hwa Jai returned to the Thai jungle once more. Hwa Jai now lives a normal life training Muay Thai to those who, like he previously, strive to be the best. Eventually Hwa Jai’s rivalry with Joe ended with the two being sparring partners, and even friends, after Joe avenges him from Wolfgang Krauser, who left Hwa Jai in the hospital before the second tournament

Hwa Jai is one of the few fighters who only appeared as a boss character in the first Fatal Fury game (Fatal Fury) and has not appeared as a playable character since.

Billy Kane

Billy Kane (ビリー・カーン) is a fighting game character who hails from England, loves punk rock and plays the guitar very well. He fights with a weapon that can be either used as a bo or as a three section staff, which he can ignite with fire. He always tries to look out for his little sister Lilly Kane.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Billy and his sister, Lilly were orphans in London until they were spotted by South Town crime lord,Geese Howard, who was on business trip in Europe. He takes the orphans in after seeing Billy use a staff in battle.

Billy was groomed to be Geese's head bodyguard and righthand man. Geese would hold The King of Fighters tournament every year with Billy as his champion. Billy was the undefeated champion of the tournament, until he was defeated by Terry Bogard in Fatal Fury, who moved on to defeat Geese. Billy came to Geese's aid at the end of the fight and took him to the hospital. Billy swore revenge against "The Lone Wolves" Terry, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi.

After Geese's apparent death, Billy went back to England with his sister. In order to adequately provide for her, Billy continued his life of crime and joined Wolfgang Krauser. He competed in Krauser's King of Fighter tournament where it was revealed that he was working for a still living Geese to overthrow Krauser. He never finished the mission because Terry Bogard defeated Krauser.

Geese returned, planning to use The Scrolls of Immortality to become a god, in Fatal Fury 3. Billy (while being an NPC) was with Geese during these events. Billy's story continues in his Real Bout profile.

Geese Howard

Click here for more information about Geese's other fighting game appearances.

Geese Howard (ギース・ハワード) is the local crime boss of the fictional city of South Town and runs the company Geese Connections. He killed Jeff Bogard in front of his son Terry Bogard's eyes.

Story (in the Fatal Fury Saga)

Geese Howard is the chief antagonist of the Fatal Fury series. He is the local crime boss of the fictional city of South Town and is the man responsible for the death of Jeff Bogard, Terry and Andy's father.

Not much is known about Geese's childhood save that Wolfgang Krauser and he share a parent. When he was old enough, Geese began training in the school of Hakkyokuseiken with Jeff Bogard, but Master Tung Fu Rue passed him over and taught Jeff the secrets of the style. This angered Geese, as ever since Tung Fu Rue declared Jeff the favorite, Geese swore revenge against Jeff. Geese had other martial arts teachers over the course of his life, which apparently included "Blue" Mary Ryan's grandfather.

In his rise to the top, Geese obtained the services of Billy Kane as his personal bodyguard (he is known to have two others, Ripper and Hopper, although they do not actually fight in the games), and set Billy up as the champion when Geese organized another King of Fighters tournament.

In 1992, three new contestants entered Geese's tournament: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Andy's friend Joe Higashi. Very few people defeated Billy, but Terry did just that, and earned the right to fight Geese himself. They battled in Geese Tower, and Terry managed to defeat him.

Fatal Fury Special, was a mostly-apocryphal game that combined the rosters of the first two Fatal Fury games. Geese was the penultimate of the five bosses, preceded by Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, and Laurence Blood, and followed by Fatal Fury 2's chief antagonist, Wolfgang Krauser. The events of Fatal Fury Special are not considered canon to the series' storyline; Geese was still widely believed to be dead (although he calls himself immortal in pre-fight quotes).

After Fatal Fury 2, Geese keeps a low profile for a while, even during the main Fatal Fury 3 tournament, but comes back in the very end, to steal the Sacred Scrolls of Immortality from the Jin twins.

Geese's story continues in his Real Bout profile.
