The difficulty levels in Mario Kart Wii are determined by the engine size of the cup; the larger the engine size, the faster all the karts and bikes are.
Mario Kart Wii has an added restriction however, due to the inclusion of bikes for the first time in the series. The 50cc class is open only to karts, while the vehicle choice for 100cc is limited to bikes. The final 150cc class and mirror mode (unlockable) is open to all vehicle types, and by completing each class winning gold trophies in each Cup you can unlock the use of all vehicles on them as well.
